Description

When someone wants to hire a skip for building work or a major house clearance, there is usually one point which is at the forefront of their mind: how much will it cost?

Sadly there is no clear answer to the question. Various contributing factors affect the price you will be charged. As a result, you could be looking at spending anywhere from £90 to £200+ to hire a small-sized skip.

What causes skip hire prices to vary?

As mentioned, several different aspects can cause the price of a skip hire to alter drastically. The main points include:

  • Location
  • Skip position
  • Skip size
  • Waste materials

Location

Perhaps the biggest factor in the variance in cost is the region where you live. If you hire a skip in Newcastle, for example, the cost will likely be significantly cheaper than doing so in London. The price can also differ within a region, so it will be more expensive in certain parts of London than others.

Skip position

Where the skip is placed will also play a part in the rental cost. If the skip will be positioned on public land, such as a road or footpath, you will typically need to acquire a permit from your local council. Again, the price of this permit will vary depending on the council you receive it from.

Skip size

The size of the skip is another element which might cause the skip hire price to change. At Martin Skip Hire, there are four main skip size options available:

  • 4 cubic yard skip
  • 6 cubic yard skip
  • 8 cubic yard skip
  • 12 cubic yard skip

As you would naturally expect, the bigger the skip size, the more expensive it will be.

Waste materials

The weight and type of waste placed into the skip is another facet which will affect the rental price. As each skip company has to take on the costs of recycling and disposing of the waste, we have to ask you about the type of materials you are planning to place in the skip. It is important to note that if you put a bulky item like a mattress in the skip, this will result in an additional charge.

Is it possible to save money when hiring a skip?

There are a few ways in which you can save cash when hiring a skip. One of the most effective is ensuring you have the right skip for the job. If you acquire a skip which is oversized for your needs, you will end up paying for extra space you do not require. Alternatively, if you underestimate the skip’s size, you could end up having to empty it and then bring in a new skip – which will double your expense.

You should also pay close attention to the materials that you are placing in the skip. If you add hazardous or inappropriate materials, the type that breach company rules, this could mean you need to pay additional fines and fees.
