The Complete Guide to Mini Skip Hire

The Complete Guide to Mini Skip Hire

A mini skip is a practical choice for garden waste, small garage clearances and minor home improvements. At Martins Skip Hire, our 4-yard mini skip holds approximately 30–40 bin bags of waste, giving you space for smaller projects without hiring a larger skip than you need. It has a capacity of around 3.06 cubic metres.

Before booking, consider the amount of rubbish, how heavy it is and where the skip will be placed. These details affect the size you need, your hire price, and whether you need to arrange a road permit.

How Big Is a Mini Skip?

Our 4-yard mini skip has the following approximate measurements:

MeasurementMini skip dimensions
Capacity4 cubic yards, approximately 3.06 m³
Length at the top2.53 metres
Length at the base1.93 metres
Width1.625 metres
Height0.89 metres
Bin bag equivalentApproximately 30–40 bags

Dimensions can vary slightly between manufacturers. The bin bag figure is also a guide: loosely packed branches and awkward objects take up more room than smaller items packed neatly together.

Skip names vary between suppliers. Some describe a 2-yard skip as a mini and a 4-yard skip as a midi. Always compare the cubic-yard capacity when checking prices so you are comparing the same size.

How Much Does Mini Skip Hire Cost?

Mini skip hire prices depend on your postcode, waste type, hire duration and whether the skip will be placed on private land or a public road. London and the South East generally have higher guide prices than northern England, although individual quotes can vary considerably.

The table below gives indicative regional budgeting ranges for the 4-yard size, based on published 2026 price guides. These are estimates rather than measured regional averages or fixed Martins Skip Hire prices.

UK regionEstimated mini skip hire cost
London£155–£355
South East£130–£320
South West£120–£285
East of England£120–£280
East Midlands£110–£255
West Midlands£110–£255
North East£100–£230
North West£100–£230
Yorkshire and the Humber£100–£230
Scotland£105–£250
Wales£110–£255
Northern Ireland£100–£230

These prices are general estimates to help you budget. Actual mini skip hire costs will vary depending on your exact postcode, waste type, hire duration and any permit requirements.

Some quotes will sit outside these ranges. For example, another supplier currently advertises a 4-yard general-waste skip at £366 including VAT for a London postcode. Your delivery address and waste details are therefore more useful than a national headline price when establishing your actual cost.

Before booking, check the total payable, included hire period and any charges for extensions or restricted items.

Typical Uses for a Mini Skip

Garden maintenance and small landscaping jobs

A mini skip can suit hedge trimmings, grass cuttings, leaves and smaller branches from a garden tidy-up. Cutting branches into manageable lengths helps reduce empty spaces and makes better use of the available capacity.

For landscaping work involving soil, turf, bricks or paving, tell us what you are removing before booking. Dense materials can make a load heavy even when the skip does not look particularly full.

Small garage and shed clearances

Old shelving, timber offcuts, cardboard boxes and general non-hazardous clutter can make a mini skip useful for a modest garage or shed clearance. Separate out chemicals, paint tins containing paint, batteries and electrical equipment before loading.

A heavily packed garage may need a larger skip, particularly if it contains bulky items that cannot be broken down safely. Estimate the whole clearance before choosing your size.

Minor renovation and DIY work

A mini skip can also be suitable for a small bathroom project, removing tiles or clearing waste from a limited repair job. The right size depends on the complete waste volume, including packaging and any fittings being removed.

Keep plasterboard separate and discuss its disposal when booking. Do not assume that every material removed during a renovation can go into the same mixed-waste skip.

What Can You Put in a Mini Skip?

A standard general-waste mini skip can usually accept:

  • Garden cuttings, leaves and small branches.
  • Non-hazardous timber and wood offcuts.
  • Cardboard and ordinary non-hazardous household rubbish.
  • Metal items.
  • Bricks, rubble and soil, subject to the agreed load and waste requirements.

Tell us if the load will consist mainly of one material, such as soil or rubble. Waste type matters as well as skip size, and the booking needs to match what you intend to dispose of.

What Cannot Go in a Mini Skip?

Do not put the following into a standard general-waste skip:

  • Asbestos or materials suspected of containing asbestos.
  • Batteries, including lithium batteries.
  • Fridges, freezers and other electrical appliances.
  • Gas cylinders or pressurised canisters.
  • Paint, solvents, oils or other liquids.
  • Tyres.
  • Clinical or medical waste.

These items require separate disposal arrangements. Check before adding anything you cannot identify, particularly older building materials or chemicals found during a garage clearance.

Plasterboard also needs separate handling. Gypsum-based waste must not be sent to landfill cells accepting biodegradable waste, so it should not be mixed into your general load without an agreed disposal arrangement.

Mini Skip Permits and Waste Disposal Rules

Permission for placing a skip on the road

A skip on your own driveway normally does not need a highway permit. For rented or shared private land, obtain the landowner’s permission before arranging delivery.

A skip placed on a public road needs permission from the relevant authority. In England and Wales, this is normally a council skip permit, often arranged by the hire company. Local conditions may require safety lights, markings and a separate parking suspension. In Northern Ireland, road consent is handled through DfI Roads. Confirm the requirements for your location before delivery.

Fill level and weight limits

Keep waste within the marked fill line or top edge of the skip. Do not stack items above the sides or add boards to increase its height. Overfilled skips may be refused collection until the excess material is removed.

The 4-yard measurement describes volume, not a guaranteed four-tonne weight allowance. Ask for the permitted load for your booking, especially when disposing of soil, concrete or rubble. Staying below the rim does not automatically mean a dense load is within its weight allowance.

Responsible waste disposal

Householders must check that the business taking their waste is authorised to do so. Check the appropriate waste-carrier register for England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and retain your booking confirmation and receipt.

Waste created by a tradesperson during construction or renovation is classed as business waste. Agree who is arranging its removal before work begins so the correct disposal arrangements are in place.

Delivery Access and Hire Duration

Check both the space for the mini skip and access for the delivery vehicle. A skip fitting on your driveway does not necessarily mean the lorry can reach it. Tell us about narrow entrances, low branches, overhead cables, restricted parking or other obstacles before delivery.

Our standard hire periods usually run for up to two weeks. Contact us to confirm the period included in your booking, arrange collection or discuss an extension. You may also need to extend a road permit if the skip remains on the highway longer.

Book Your Mini Skip With Martins

A mini skip is a useful option when your project produces around 30–40 bin bags of suitable waste. If you expect more rubbish, compare our skip sizes before booking to reduce the risk of needing a second delivery.

For a price based on your postcode and waste type, book your mini skip online or call us on 03300 948 167. We can help confirm the size, access requirements and any permit arrangements before your delivery.
